“From Coal to Culture”
Culture’s Contribution to Reinventing an Industrial Region
4th - 5th June 2010

Background

In 2010, Essen, major city of the metropolitan Ruhr Area, is European Capital of Culture (ECC). Essen and the Ruhr Area, once the most booming and affluent of Germany’s regions for its coal mining and heavy industry, experienced a severe economic decline in the last decades of the 20th century and is now in the middle of a fascinating process of reinventing itself as one of the most creative, original and aspiring places in Germany. Whilst many of the Ruhr cities are struggling hard with current economic backlash and financial deficits verging on bankruptcy, no other German region has so much potential: no other has such a large population (over 5m), more higher education institutions, theaters, opera houses or headquarters of DAX-listed corporations, and no other has as rich and diverse a history of immigration – from Catholic Polish miners in the 19th century to Turkish industrial workers in the 20th to a cosmopolitan elite of High-Tech scientists and managers today. And whilst Essen/Ruhr seems to be hardly known or noticed abroad, in Germany the region is increasingly challenging Berlin as “the place to be” – rough and raucous, but real! It’s certainly a place that will soon put itself on the agenda of Europe’s leaders

and it features prominently as a fancy “insider tip” in Wallpaper, Architectural Digest and the like. Do not miss this unique opportunity to understand this place and its leaders while it is still in the making.

Agenda

The main objective of this Event Day is to identify the positive effect culture in general and ECC in particular can have on the development of cities and regions. Together with Common Purpose participants and alumni from Germany and other European cities that are ECC in 2010 (Istanbul, Pécs) or have been in the past (Glasgow, Dublin, Amsterdam, Liverpool, Cork, Lille, Rotterdam) we want to identify what leaders from different sectors do, have done and could do to leverage the cultural capital of a region for significant social and economic change. Participants have the chance to meet with leaders from established cultural institutions and one-off projects, and with the CEO of Ruhr2010 Ltd (organising the ECC programme), representatives from politics (including the Mayor of Essen), public administration, major corporations sponsoring the ECC and from the Turkish community.

Timing

The event starts on 4th June at 9.00am and ends on the morning of 5th June at 11:00am after a concluding breakfast session bringing together the main points of learning for leaders who want to make culture a more effective asset for their regions. Dinner on 4th June is hosted by Mercator Foundation, a major regional and national philanthropic player and one of the most prominent funders of science, education, culture and social change (mainly on the integration of ethnic minorities).

Additional Option

For those who want to further explore the rich cultural programme of Essen ECC, we offer the opportunity for an extended stay on June 5th that includes a visit to the largest ever sing-along “auf Schalke” at the major stadium of the most prominent Soccer-Club of the Region.
